On 18th December, 1914, the 2nd Bedfordshire battalion of 21 Brigade, 7th Division moved into the front line at Fleurbaix, a few miles to the south of Armentières, specifically to support and attack by the 2nd Yorkshire battalion. However this attack was cancelled and on 20th December, 2nd Bedfordshire moved back to billets. Frank Toull was killed on 20th December but there is no further information concerning the circumstances of his death. The attrition rate among British soldiers on the Western Front was on average 300 each day and 60% of these were as a result of shellfire. When not involved in an actual battle it was either shell fire or a sniper’s bullet that caused most deaths and injuries.
